Despite the decades of data suggesting that the stress associated with the anesthesia profession may lead to maladaptive coping mechanisms and that it is a true occupational hazard for those in training, little progress has been made understanding the prevalence and improvement related to education and outcomes. Learners will create a healthier student body, work force, and as a consequence, to optimize patient safety.
The New England Assembly of Schools Faculty Development Workshop / Art Zwerling Consensus Conference held in 2019 was filmed with the intended purpose to meet the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA) requirement for Health & Wellness/Substance Use Disorder (SUD) curriculum and continuing education. The five lectures build consensus on (re) defining a healthy work environment and introduce to faculty and students alike concepts of healthy coping skills and resiliency strategies to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These strategies practiced, along with knowledge gained, can help prevent unhealthy coping and mitigate the occupational risk of SUD among anesthesia professionals. The significance of this learning is to create a healthier student body, workforce, and as a consequence, to optimize patient safety.
