CRNAs were widely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancelling of elective and non-urgent procedures at the start of the pandemic resulted in significant employment reductions while the spread of a dangerous and infectious respiratory disease caused major practice challenges in treating patients and protecting providers. The AANA conducted two membership surveys related to COVID-19 impacts on employment and clinical practice. The surveys were conducted March 27 to April 7 and from May 5 to May 18, 2020. In the first survey, respondents were asked about employment characteristics including the impact of COVID-19 such as furlough or reduction in hours, and the rescheduling of non-urgent and elective procedures. Questions related to clinical practice challenges, such as shortages in PPE and potential changes to their role as CRNA, were asked of respondents who indicated that they were still working. Also, facility-related topics included the expansion of ICU capacity and the anticipated use of extreme measures in caring for COVID-19 patients such as the use of anesthesia machines as ventilators and splitting of ventilators to support multiple patients. The second survey was conducted as many states were reopening and beginning to resume elective surgical services. It was able to better assess the temporary versus longer-term nature of the impact on CRNA employment as well as the ongoing challenges around PPE and preparations and precautions related to caring for COVID-19 patients. Additional topics included the prevalence of anesthesia and pain medication shortages.
