Research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has focused on psychiatric symptoms, with less emphasis on the relationship between PTSD and physical functioning. With the incidence of stress and stress-related disorders increasing, so must our awareness of the link between stress and physical health. The impact of PTSD on physical health, especially cardiovascular disease, is discussed in this presentation. Increased awareness of the effects of PTSD will enhance our physical assessment and understanding of this patient population as we provide their medical care.
