Historically, racial and ethnic minority nurse anesthesia students are severely underrepresented in graduate nurse anesthesia programs. This phenomenon is accompanied with social isolation in academia and in clinical rotations. This adversely impacts any well-meaning efforts in combating racial/health disparities. Social isolation is not in congruence with university affiliate diversity initiatives and mission. This presentation will bring awareness of this issue that have been in existence for decades. And, will express the negative effects of social isolation and offer strategic initiatives to reduce this phenomenon with measurable outcomes. These strategic efforts are multi-faceted with a purposeful agenda to address this issue. This presentation brings awareness of a problem that need research and future publication in a peer-review nursing journal.

Dr. Wallena Gould, EdD, CRNA, FAAN is the founder of the non-profit organization, Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program and former Chief Nurse Anesthetist. For 15 years, this mentoring program has successfully mentored over 510 diverse critical care nurses to successfully matriculate into 68 out 120 graduate nurse anesthesia programs.
In August 2018, Dr. Gould was honored as The Trailblazer Awardee at the National Black Nurses Association Annual Conference for her work in diversifying the nurse anesthesia profession and graduate nurse anesthesia programs. In August 2019, Dr. Gould was the recipent of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Achievement.
