Basic Transesophageal Echocardiography: The CRNA Perspective (1 Class A CE)

The purpose of this lecture is to introduce the CRNA to transesophageal echo (TEE). The basic imaging modalities will be discussed and the CRNA will be able to differentiate between B-Mode, M-Mode, 2-D and 3-D Doppler. Basic 2D Doppler including pulse wave, continuous wave, and color flow will be discussed. The CRNA will learn to use color-flow to identify the general speed and direction of blood flow in the heart. Probe depth and image orientation will be used to identify the heart's structures. The most commonly utilized views of the heart and LV will be reviewed using static images initially, followed by web-based interactive heart models and dynamic images. CRNAs are encouraged to bring their computer or tablet for this purpose. By the end of the lecture the CRNA should be able to identify the structures in each of the covered views. Left ventricular wall segments and coronary perfusion will be discussed as well as clinical uses for each view. The views that will be covered include:

• Mid-esophageal 4 chamber view

• Mid-esophageal 2 chamber view

• Mid-esophageal long axis view

• Transgastric mid- short axis view

• Mid-esophageal aortic valve short axis view

• Mid-esophageal, bicaval view
